COBRA Helpful Hints

Both state and federal law may give certain employees, spouses and dependent children the right to continue employer-sponsored health benefits if they lose their benefits because of specific "qualifying events." The type of qualifying event determines who is qualified for continued coverage and for how long. If both state and federal law apply to the group health plan, the employer must offer employees and eligible dependents a choice between continuing coverage under state law or continuing coverage under the federal Consolidated Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act (COBRA).
